JMD Update!
Since starting my indie pattern business nearly two years ago, I’ve learned a lot about straight and plus-size pattern drafting and fit, digital pattern drafting and grading, graphic design, and so much more!
This process included over eight months of work focused on creating, pattern testing, and fitting my separately drafted straight (Marian: 0-16) and plus-size (Guinevere: 14-32) blocks.
Over the past two years, I’ve published the following patterns after going through pattern testing: the Sparrow-Lark Skirt, the Pheasant Dress (samples pictured above), the Catbird Dress, the Hedgie Cloak, and the Swordgrass Dress. Many thanks goes out to the pattern testers!
These patterns plus the Modern Hanbok Quilted Nambawi will continue to be available on my Etsy store once it reopens, which I plan on doing soon after adding some updates and a new pattern!
Now that my straight and plus-size blocks (base patterns) are thoroughly tested, I plan on adding the following changes:
-As I’m confident in the fit of my Marian: 0-16 and Guinevere: 14-32 pattern blocks, I will likely send out less pattern tester calls in the future.
-Some of my earlier patterns, especially the Sparrow-Lark Skirt, the Pheasant Dress, and the Catbird Dress, contain lots of options! These patterns pack a lot of bang for your buck; however, they also contain large pattern and instructions files.
Moving forward, my goal is to streamline my patterns so that they continue to have interesting designs but generally utilize smaller files and simpler yardage charts. Most future patterns will include a Variations section, which includes instructions for adding different pattern variations.
The new, upcoming pattern is the Dancing Macaw Top and Skirt, which is inspired by the glamorous clothing of the late 1940s.
The Dancing Macaw Top and Skirt will be available as a free pattern to those who completed one of the Fitted Peplum Top pattern tests!
Design options include a top with a subtle sweetheart neckline, short sleeves, and full circle peplum that can be paired with an included flared, below knee-length skirt. Depending on the fabric, the Dancing Macaw Top and Skirt can be made as a modern, everyday staple or with vintage flair!
Future Pattern Focus
For the upcoming year, I still plan on focusing on patterns that are vintage-inspired, fantasy renaissance faire friendly, Joseon Modern/modern hanbok designs, and/or from the Victorian-Edwardian era.
I have a lot of pattern ideas in the works and am currently in the sample-making stage of a 1970s/renfaire inspired dress with a sweetheart neckline, basque (pointed) waist, long sleeves, and a flared skirt with a ruffle and (opt). cutaway pockets!
(Please note that this list may be subject to change)
I’m looking forward to another year of pattern drafting!
