Corsets! Corsets!
Corsets! Corsets!
I’m currently working on four new historical corset patterns that can also be styled for a renfaire. It’s been a lot of fun researching historical corsets from patents and other period sources, learning about different methods of corset construction, and experimenting with advanced pattern drafting and corset fitting techniques!
-1860s-1876 Ironweed Corset: This is a Demi-bust corset, which was the standard shape at the time and is cut at the bust apex. As voluminous crinolines and first bustle-era hoops were in fashion, corsets from this timeframe generally have a shorter hip length than later parts of the Victorian era.
-1876-1890s Meadowhawk Corset: This is a mid-bust corset with a sweetheart neckline, which was a popular style for this era. The longer hip length on this corset allows for the smooth silhouettes of the Natural Form era and continued to be popular throughout the 1890s.
-1900-1909 Comet Moth Corset: This is a mid-bust S-Bend/straight front corset based off of one of Daniel Kops’ iconic patent designs. Optional side wings are included, similar to the original patent!
-1910-1916 Bluet Corset: This is a long mid bust corset perfect for achieving a Titanic era or early WWI silhouette.
Currently, my first pattern drafts of all four corsets in both my Marian: 0-16 and plus-size friendly Guinevere: 14-32 size ranges are complete, including cup sizes A-G/H. I also made a draft incorporating some initial corset fit adjustments to fit my non-standard measurements, which is pictured in the sturdy purple and black polyester houndstooth.
After experimenting with the polyester mock-ups and determining boning placement, the next steps will be to make straight and plus-size samples and prepare everything that goes into an illustrated JMD pdf pattern. (There may also potentially be a pattern test to check the clarity of the instructions and fitting guide).
I’m working on some additional non-corset pattern projects as well and am excited to share them when they’re ready!
